NBL 1500s:
FT8905 Newcastle,
FT9488C The Hodgsons of Hebburne found their wealth in coal, employing hundreds of
workers. North-east England coal fields, covering eastern Durham and southeast Northumberland, well-developed prior to the Industrial Revolution, drew gentry and poormen alike. Richard HODGSON, Sheriff of Newcastle 1549, was its Mayor 1555, 1566 and 1580. In the 1630s Sir Robert HODGSON was granted title to bear arms by the College of Heralds. The Hodgsons of Bascodyke, Cumberland, may be part of the original section of the Hodgson family which found its way into the gentry, and that the Hodgsons of Hebburne are related by a migration of a branch of this family from the Solway to the Tyne, carrying the same coat of arms.
