Testing Your Skill (Cousins Removed ) Answers

From the Cousins Removed page the following questions were asked: The correct answers follow each question.

(Q1) In your family tree you have two third cousins four times removed. What relationship does each cousin have to the common grandparents?

Answer 1: Third cousins share the same great x2 grandparents. The cousin with precedence i.e. earlier generation or the older cousin is the great great grandchild. The younger cousin, however, being four times removed i.e. four generations apart, would have to be the great x6 grandchild.

(Q2) In your family tree you have grandparents with one great grandchild and one great x5 grandchild. What is the relationship between the two grandchildren?

Answer 2: The older cousin takes precedence. Being a great grandchild means the two cousins share the same great grandparents. This makes them second cousins. Four generations apart makes them second cousins four times removed.
