Exiled Down Under

Have you missing ancestors on your family tree who seemed to have disappeared off the face of the earth? If they were of the 19th century, perhaps they were exiled--banished from England to Australia. From the Dictionary of Western Australians Vol.2 1850-1868, put out by the University of Western Australia Press in 1979, the following were listed, each of whom had been charged of a breach deemed sufficient to warrant exile. Certainly there was no mercy for repeat offenders. Exile may be more civilised than having their hands amputated, but it was still very harsh.

Terms: TL - ticket of leave, CP - conditional pardon, CF - conditional freedom, Exp. (expiry) - full pardon. All include date granted. Convict Number in brackets. Marital status and occupation when convicted. Some entries show convict's career as a ticket of leave man.
