Your E-mail Queries

Welcome to World Hodgsons Order, a global genealogy circle that shares Hodgson family trees at this web site free of charge. Your e-mails, past and future, are posted here! Queries are carefully edited for space considerations. If you've moved on, or you have a query to overwrite, e-mail WHO. It will be good to hear from you.

The aim is to answer every e-mail; responses are "continually under construction". Can you help? Coded e-mail links must be edited to function. Share your correspondence or the outcome with WHO to have either posted here.

Has your e-mail address changed? Please let WHO know how to find you.

Rationale behind our filing system:
WHO has 1000 Hodgson family trees accessible at RootsWeb's WorldConnect; go to FTaccess under Research. Each tree has its donor's name and address attached to it but these do not make a good filing system -- names do repeat (especially in this venture) and addresses do change! So, every new tree is assigned a number. People forget to update or they move or they drop away, even pass away. Regardless, their trees stay on file with the ID numbers unaltered. Every number has two alpha letters which can change:
FT# = a family tree on file, example FT3049, FT meaning Family Tree.
NA# = no family tree on file, example NA3311, NA meaning Not Available.
CA# = amalgamated tree from two or more donors, example CA1783. CA meaning Common Ancestor.

Researching the almost entirely unknown early history of the Walker Family (as in, Presidents Bush) for a possible future narrative publication. My research shows a Robert HODGSON (possibly of Cecil Co., MD USA.) m.1801 Catherine (nee McLELLAND) WALKER at Philadelphia. Hodgson supposedly a widower; Catherine the widow of Thomas WALKER. Thomas and Catherine were gggg-grandparents and their son George E. WALKER the ggg-grandparent of current US President George Walker Bush. Seek to confirm subsequent marriage of Catherine to Robert. Will share Hodgson vitals and ties to Cecil Co., as well as to Philadelphia and the Walkers. Hodgson is thought to have roots in Cecil Co. via Worsell Manor.

Great x3 grandfather John Samuel SPENCER of Watford. Came across your file on Sarah HODGSON and family. Attached papers: The Spencer Ancestor Table, Spencer Genaelogy, and Genaelogy of Viscount Spencer of Gerasa. I've been piecing together and find the close carrying-forward of certain family names significant, Fanny and George Hodgson SPENCER as examples. After they settled in southern Manitoba, they formed a Spencer family cemetery called Blenheim. Was this their admiration for the great palace or did they have a connection to the Spencer-Churchills? I have been trying to find John Samuel's parents and what sort of living they had in Watford. What was John Hodgson's trade? When did Mary Sarah Hodgson die?

Searches for Hodgson and Skirpenbeck (a hamlet just east of York, England), I found two websites that mention James HODGSON, b. 22 July 1793 England, son of Richard HODGSON and Mary BEAL. The other site is a British Columbia Kamloops site about this group of HODGSONs who emmigrated to Prince Edward Island. In it were many relatives of James HODGSON. I have new information about Jamesand want\ to correct his wife Frances' surname to COTTOM. It's easy to think the name is COTTON, but it is actually COTTOM. Frabces is an older sister of my great great great grandfather Thomas COTTOM. At the York Library I found Mary COTTOM, my great grandmother, a niece of the above Frances COTTOM. The 1851 Census showed Mary as the daughter of Thomas COTTOM of Skirpenbeck. He was christened 1812 Skirpenbeck. I visited the hamlet and the church warden showed me his copies of the records. The son of James and Frances (COTTOM) HODGSON, James, is a widower in Co. Durham in 1881, living alone. I have nothing about his wife. I have 1841 and 1851 Censuses for James and Frances HODGSON. The older children are not present in either one. My only success has been to learn that Annie HODGSON (born 1834 Sand Hutton) married Samuel THOMPSON, widower, in York 1860. In the 1861 Census Mary COTTOM's older sister Isabella COTTOM was living with Samuel and Ann THOMPSON in York. Before Samuel's death in 1867 Ann had two sons that survived: James Hodgson THOMPSON and William Francis THOMPSON. The IGI shows their baptismal dates on the same day but they were not twins. I am trying to get William's marriage. I have the records of James Hodgson Thompson's burial in York Cemetery but no clue about survivors. I have burials for James and Frances HODGSON.

My great grandfather William James WATSON b.1867 m.Mary Elizabeth HODGSON (b.26 Feb 1867 d.1947). He was the 9th child of John HODGSON 1830-1915 and Eleanor HASWELL b.1832. For some years William and Mary, and their two sons John and William, lived with the widowed John HODGSON at 27 Saint Cuthbert's Terrace, Deptford, Sunderland. During this time they were paying a mortgage to John HODGSON for a house at 11 Carol Street, just around the corner but did not manage to move out and into their new home for some time. It was therefore extremely intriguing to find your information on Ancestry and your One World tree with a note on John HODGSON that he had retired from being a sailmaker at 44 and was then listed as a Property Speculator. Other relatives were also living in Carol Street at that time and seek information or sources on his role as speculator, as he obviously kept his daughter and her husband with him after they appear to have paid for their house.

Yet to find them in 1851 or 1861 censuses. Daughter Elizabeth Dinah BROWN b.1866 Leadgate so there may be other children. Eliz. Dinah living with grandparents George and Elizabeth COLLINSON at Leadgate (census 1881)--was her mother deceased? Elizabeth COLLINSON b.c1821 Stanhope making her 15 when Ann was born (or Ann was younger than stated on her marriage). Was Elizabeth COLLINSON Ann's mother? Have not found a suitable marriage for George COLLINSON and Elizabeth HODGSON (or is this her 2nd marriage?) Possibly Elizabeth HODGSON (your file #472) b Stanhope 12 May 1821.

I am still trying to find the origin of the elusive George Hodgson b.c1701. He is the first documented American ancestor for many Americans of the Hodgson, Hodson and Hodgin family. I have today discovered a poorly documented suggestion that he was born in Newcastle, Ireland. One of several family traditions has him coming from Ireland, but the Newcastle reference is new to me. I found this lead at the following site: http://www.geocities.com/judylangen/hodgson/desc0001.htm

WHO WebMaster's Response: Quaker historian Gwen Bjorkman writes, "I am a descendant and have tried to prove his parents but all I can prove is who his parents are not." Many have settled on their own ideas, thus antecedents and descendants both sides of the said George. Because of the uncertainty of this George's true ancestry, we have two family tree files, one prior to and up to a George, and the other starting at a George and proceeding to the present day. We have no clues or documentation to connect the two Georges as one and the same person. Our two files are CA422 and CA1366, accessible from our web page FTaccess. The late Clay Hodgin's book "Early History of the Quaker Hodgson-Hodson-Hodgin Family" published 1988 is where the incorrect link was first shown between the CA422 and CA1366 lines. Unfortunately many Hodgson researchers want to stick to and believe in Clay's poor research. Whether incidentally or not, there is a George Hodgson b.1701 Doncaster YKS ENG, son of a John Hodgson, secondary source IGI.

This is in response to your postings at RootsWeb concerning Rose Cecile Hodgson and Clara Elizabeth Hodgson. Clara was my husband’s great-grandmother; after her death her husband, James Charrairon Dupuy (a Haitian), married her sister, Rose. According to family records, Clara was born in 1848, Rose in 1851. We have next to no information on either of these women, although some of the family members believe they may have been daughters of a pastor. I have been unable to determine their parents, where they were born, or how they came to be in Haiti. Your posting provides birthplaces, and I would be interested in any more details you might be able to provide.

I am a 3rd cousin to Roderick L. Hodgson in Quebec, Canada, one of your contributors. He and I are descended from the 12 children of John Hodgson and Mary Isabella Lancaster, as is Karen Allen who has recently been in contact with you. At least, you HAD our 'known family tree' -- Karen recently emailed you asking about the two Georges listed in the generation before the John named above, and when I returned to your website to check a couple things I discovered that OUR George had been zapped!! The George married to a Mary Crosswaite (spelling?) remained and our George who was married to Mary Bland was deleted. No George and Mary Bland, so no John Hodgson to marry Mary Isabella Lancaster, so no 12 children to be our great-grandparents, so no 3rd cousins named Roderick and Donna and Karen! Wish I could lose weight that easily. Can you tell me what happened? No hurry, I know through Karen that you are very busy right now.

I came across the SHARE entry for this Hodgson family and noticed that in the entry for William HODGSON, christened June 24, 1814 in Hinderwell, you note that his family is scattered across England and that there are descendants in Canada. I have not been able to find any information on William to date. Would you know the location of the descendants in Canada? I am a descendant of Francis and Mary HODGSON through their son George, born 1784, brother of James born 1783. I also noticed that you made reference to having names of issue for George DICKSON and Annie HODGSON.

We had a difficult time getting a birth certificate (BC) for our mother. The info we were working with (from my mother Sarah McCallum HODGSON's marriage certificate) did not match up with info on the BC. so we decided to concentrate on her sister, Margaret Elizabeth McCallum HODGSON, a nurse. We followed Aunt Margaret through South Africa, and got a lead from the Nursing Association that enabled us to acquire a BC. Parental names on the two BCs matched. We learned the correct names of our grandparents (Edward George HODGSON & Sarah McLEOD/McCLEOD) also that Aunt Margaret was born in 1900. So, we have two open files, (1) the burial location of our father (nothing after Halifax,1932) and (2) auntie's burial location in Africa, (nothing after Estcourt SA 1954, possible married name KNOX?)

At the Hodgson website, I couldn't find my George listed as the son of Thomas HODGSON and Agnes GRAHAM, nor the descendants of George HODGSON and Mary BLAND. My research sources say they do. I have newspaper obits, articles and family bible records back to my great great grandparents and they that tell me their names were John and Mary HODGSON and they lived in Como, Vaudreuil, Canada. My cousin Donna put me in touch with Rod Hodgson of Como who has data different than yours. I can see that you will want the information I have on the descendants of Charles CROOKS and Mary HODGSON. However, it's not well documented. I've been to the gravesites and will take pictures. The old newspaper obits are loaded with misspellings but because they were passed down through my grandparents, I know that these are my true kin. Some of the documentation I will need on deaths and marriages will be recorded at our county courthouse. Some of the births should be available through the state department of health. Many of the oldest children were born in Como area. The eldest was 11 when they left Canada for Michigan. If I can't find documentation other than family records and memorabelia, do I submit the information anyway?

Over the course of the last two years I have been creeping backward with my research in all branches of my family tree. I don't have any Hodgson blood until I get back to my great grandmother Mary HODGSON, daughter of John HODGSON and Mary Isabella LANCASTER of Quebec Donna Boyce and I share sibling great grandparents. We met via the internet and have become true cousins. She is helping me research Charles CROOKS who married Mary HODGSON in 1879, Quebec. I unpacked more old family post cards, correspondence between Donna's great grandfather and his children and my grandmother. They were dated 1906-1909 and were in a box packed away circa 1960. It was a wonderful surprise.

Saw your interest in the Nellist family of Houlsike at RootsWeb. I descend from William NELLIST (d.1797) through his son John, b.1749. John's mother was Elizabeth CLARKE. I believe William married again after her death. There was a John NELLIST as a witness at the marriage of William NELLIST to Susannah HODGSON. There was a William NELLIST buried 1775 'of Houlsike' and he may be the father. MIs or wills might sort this out.

You have my great great grandmother Alice HODGSON b.1805 Preston. It is not easy to find Alice HODGSON / REYNOLDS (including variants) and her daughter my great gandmother, Elizabeth HODGSON / REYNOLDS / FORSHAW. In the Preston 1841 census Alice HODGSON, widowed, 3 young children: Elizabeth b.1840. John b.1838 and Richard b.1836. Alice was a Charwoman to William WRENNALL, butcher. Census 1851 much the same. Census 1861, Alice WRENNALS and my grandfather's older brother Richard FORSHAW b.1859 Preston, staying with her and William. William and Alice m.1864 in their 50's in a Catholic chapel; William was married already in the censuses and may have had to wait for her death to marry Alice. Elizabeth HODGSON m.1858 Richard FORSHAW under the name REYNOLDS. She had used her stepfather's surname but he wed her mother in 1864, Elizabeth married in 1858. Was he her father? William REYNOLDS, butcher, was shown as her father on Elizabeth's marriage cert to Richard FORSHAW. It gets confusing working back from here. Elizabeth gave her maiden name as Elizabeth HODGSON on my grandfather's birth cert but she used both REYNOLDS (and variants as she didn't sign her name) or HODGSON (again variants) on all of her 14 children's baptismal records. A woman with two maiden names, each with variants has complicated searches. On Alice's marriage cert, her father is James HODGSON, brick maker. What are your sources for James and Ann FISHER.

Family tree CA14256 originated in Cumberland, linked to CA582 ath the marriage of my great great grandparents William HODGSON and Jane HODGSON in 1869. Attached is a revised version. I originally had illegitimate Sarah HODGSON, bp.1817 Cumrew, was the daughter of Elizabeth HODGSON b.1800, but reference to the will of her uncle William HODGSON d.1851, indicates that she was actually the daughter of his sister Elizabeth HODGSON bp,1783 Cumrew. Several of the marriages are isonymic--at that time the Castle Carrock, Cumrew and Hayton area was brimming with Hodgsons. Found second and third Hodgson cousins living in Toronto, descended from William and Jane HODGSON. Also passed on this to third cousin Joe Hodgson of Guisborough YNR ENG.
