A hodge podge

Is Rogerson Related?

Hodge is a diminutive of the Norman name Roger. Therefore Hodgsons and Rogersons may have common roots. The legendary Roger, or Hodge of Ferry, near Ferry Hill, north west of Bishop Auckland (County Durham), was said to have saved the residents of Brancepeth (Brawn's path), like a latter-day St. George, from the depradations of a savage wild boar. The story may be true, because the residents erected a cross in honour of Hodge, which still exists. Was this Hodge (or Roger de Ferry) the father of an early Hodgson?

He feared noy ye loute with hys staffe
Nor yet for ye Knyghte in hys mayle
He cared no more for ye Monk with hys boke
Than the fyendis in depe Croix Dale

Then out spoke Hodge, yt wyghte soe bolde
Yt onse on Ferie hye
And he hathe sworne by Seynt Cuthberte bys rode
Yt this horride brawne shall dye

In Bishop Langley's Register, Agnes, daughter of John Hogeson of Elyngton (Elingham) was licensed to marry her cousin John Rogerson by Papal dispensation on 11 Sep 1439.
