How is Hodgson Pronounced?

From a survey of SHARE members in 1994:

'We pronounce it Hodgin and I have seen this spelling. Others pronounce it Hudgeon and still more Hodson. When in Egremont I say Hodgin but if I'm elsewhere I say Hodge-son.' June Thompson, Merseyside, England.

'In past centuries, the 'g' was usually silent e.g. Agnes would be pronounced and often spelt Annis. My g.g.grandfather was recorded as William Hudson but his grandfather was found as Charles Hodgson. It depends on regional accents and how well the Parish Clerk could write and spell. My Aussie relative say Hodson.' Sue Bowell, Bristol, England.

'We have always pronounced and spelled our name as Hod-g-son (Hodshon).' Christine Keitel, Victoria, Australia.

'We sound the surname Hodgson with a silent g.' Eleanor Macnamara, Victoria, Australia.

'In Hudson, Quebec, it is a silent g. Hodgson families in Hudson have always done it that way as long as anyone can remember. Local French Canadians trip over that 'g' like a massive logjam!' Rod Hodgson, Quebec, Canada.

'We pronounce the g (and we have Hudsons marrying Hodgsons!)' Sheila Francis, Ontario, Canada.

'Our family always pronounced it Hodgin.' Jenny Dedman, Oxford, England.

'As a Cumbrian resident (northwest England), we pronounce it as odgin.' Barbara Male, Warwickshire, England.
